Math invented or discovered

Welcome to math forum,

There is a great scene in Kurt Vonnegut's book, _Cat's Cradle_, in
which a hard-core scientist is arguing with his secretary about truth.
He challenges her to say something that is absolutely true, and she
responds by saying "God is love." He looks at her and asks, "What is
'God'? What is 'love'?"

This is the essence of philosophical exposition, as practiced in the
West. examples on help with math; You choose two words whose
definitions aren't agreed upon by
anyone, and then proceed to claim that there is some necessary
relationship between their referents:

Math is [invented | discovered].

Inventing math

Welcome to free math tutoring,

Let's begin with your assertion that "You can't 'invent' 1 + 1 = 2; it
just does."

On the contrary,

1 + 1 = 0 in mod(2) arithmetic

1 + 1 = 10 in base(2) arithmetic

1 + 1 = 1 in Boolean arithmetic

1 + 1 = [an arbitrary value] in group theory, depending on
your choice of group.

In fact, '1 + 1 = 2' is a consequence of selecting one particular set
of rules to define one particular formal system. examples on math helper; But there are lots of
other systems that can be defined, and confusing 'Peano arithmetic'
with 'mathematics' is like confusing 'Chess' with 'games'. Learn more on math tutors online.

Math intuition

Welcome to math tutor online free,

we have to be convinced that math really tells the truth. It's
often been pointed out that airplane pilots flying by instruments can
be deceived by their own senses into thinking the plane is upside-down
in a cloud, when it is really right-side up. math forum; If they try to "right"
it, they will be in trouble.

So they have to learn that their
instruments really are reliable. Similarly, if we don't have reason to
believe logic, it will not be able to convince us that our intuitive
answer is wrong. more examples on online math forum.

Quadratic help

Welcome to math tutor online,
The standard quadratic form

ax^2 + bx + c = 0

is exactly equivalent to the quadratic formula

   -b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)
x = ----------------------
          2a

So you could 'undo' the formula, and then proceed
as I proceeded. similar problems on math forum.

   -b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)
x = ----------------------
          2a

.
.
.

ax^2 + bx + c = 0

          bx = -ax^2 - c

           b = (-ax^2 - c) / x

But since you _know_ that there is a path from the formula to the
equation, there is no need for you to write it down.

Math Non euclidean geometry

Greetings from help in math,

The field of mathematics that deals with this kind of thing is called
'non-Euclidean geometry' because Euclid made some assumptions about
the shape of space, which, it turns out, aren't _necessarily_ true.

If you find this kind of thing interesting, you might want to check
out the book _Flatland_, by Edwin Abbott, math forum; which is a novel about
creatures who live in worlds with different numbers of dimensions.
It's pretty easy to read, and will give you quite a lot to think
about!

Pie constant

Welcome to free math tutoring,

On the one hand, that _does_ seem pretty amazing, doesn't it? And it
leads to some pretty bizarre conclusions.

For example, if you tie a string around a beach ball, and you want to
add enough string to make it one inch away from the ball all the way
around, online math forum; you have to add about 6 inches (pi times the increase in the
diameter, two inches) of string.

If you tied a string around the entire earth, and you wanted to add
enough string to lift it one inch off the ground everywhere, you would
have to add the same amount of string -- about 6 inches! learn more on math forum.

Studying math tips

Greetings from math tutors online,
Usually when you have a test, it's going to be about what you've been
learning recently. For example, if you just finished chapter 5 in the
book, then the test will almost certainly be about the material in
chapter 5.

So the way you study for the test is to read through chapter 5 and
make sure that you can answer all of the practice questions at the end
of each section. math forum; If you can answer those, then you'll probably be able
to answer any question on the test.

Remembering math formulas

Welcome to help in math,

Try imagining yourself _using_ what you're learning at any given
moment. The more vivid your imagination, the stronger the effect it
will have on your memory. With math, the thing to do might be to try
to find examples in physics where you would use any new concept or
technique.

I never used to be able to remember quotations from books, and then at
some point I decided that I'd like to be able to do that. online math forum; So now
whenever I read a book, I highlight every interesting sentence or
phrase that I want to remember... and I try to imagine myself in a
situation where I would quote it. And it works!

Derive math

Welcome to math online tutor,

This derivation is itself only valid if you accept the rules
of logic. You would have to postulate something like:

If (0) holds and
(1) and (2) hold, then the successor of zero is a natural number (one
is just a convenient name for the successor of zero).

You could go on
like this forever, proposing higher-level rules and setting them down
as further assumptions, but no end is in sight. (This comes from a
classic Lewis Carroll dialogue.) learn more on math forum.

Mathematical terms

Welcome to free online math tutoring,
You could certainly invent your own meaning for mathematical terms,
so that "equals" could only be used between two of the same number
(2 = 2). But that would be worthless, since it would not allow any
calculations to be done; and it would neglect millennia of human
experience that calculations can in fact be done.

You could also say that numbers have no reality in themselves, and that is in a sense
true. What makes math "work" is that numbers, math help which are not a part of
the "real" world, nevertheless describe it very accurately.

It doesn't really matter whether numbers are "real" or whether they are an "exact
representation" of reality (they are correct, but not complete); they
are simply a language that describes one aspect of the reality we
perceive.
I hope the above explanation was useful, now let us study help in math.

Equal and identical math

Welcome to math tutor online free,

"Equal" does not mean "identical"; it means that they are two
different ways to describe the same reality: I can view the apples as
a set of two and a set of three, or as one set of five.

If I walk forward two steps, wait a minute, then walk forward three steps, I
will be in the same place as if I had walked five steps all at once.
So "2+3" and "5" are "equal" in the sense that they have the same
meaning in free math, or produce the same result, even though they are different
symbols.

Math Real Numbers

Welcome to free math help,

A branch of mathematics that deals usually with the nonnegative
real numbers including sometimes the transfinite cardinals and
with the application of the operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division to them math help.

while mathematics is the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations,
combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space
configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations,
and generalizations.
I hope the explanation was useful, let us see what is online math tutors.

What is mathematics

Welcome to help with math problems,

My own favorite definition as your math helper is that math is the study of abstractions.
That is, we isolate one or a few features of some kind of object for
study, and see what we can learn about the behavior of those features
while ignoring everything else about them: features like number,
shape, or direction.

For example, when we work with numbers we are
taking the concept of counting away from all other details about the
things we are counting, such as color or name, and just thinking about
how many there are.

We learn to work with numbers as an abstract
entity, so that we can add two numbers without having to think of them
as representing two apples and three apples. When we finish our
calculations with numbers, we can come back to the real world and know
just how many apples we have, learn more in our math forum.

What is mathematics

So what is math? It's really a very good question, and not particularly so easy to answer.

You'll get lots of different answers depending on math helper whom you ask. It's a big thing that you can describe it in different ways, depending on your perspective. I'm going to give my own, and you can pipe in with your own in the comments.

To me, math is the study of how to create, manipulate, and understand abstract structures. Math can works with numbers, the various different sets of numbers are examples of one of the kinds of abstract structures that we can work with math tutoring.

But math is so much more than just numbers. It's numbers, and sets, and categories, and topologies, and graphs, and much, much more.
