Function Symbols

Mathematical function symbols are used universal. Symbols acts as key role in mathematics. There are different kinds of symbols in mathematics to represent different operations and notations. Symbols are mostly used for represents the variables and constants. Based on the symbols only we can find the operation, relationship, shapes, constants and variables. Romans are used symbols for representing numbers too. Let us see about function symbols.

Fundamental Symbols Used in Function:

Some fundamental function symbols are given below:

Operational symbols
Relational symbols
Grouping symbols
Set notation symbols
Miscellaneous symbols

Symbols
Examples for the Function Symbols:

Example 1:

‘+’ Plus sign means addition.

57 “plus” 4 is 61.

57 + 4 =61.

Example 2:

‘-‘Minus Sign means subtract.

45 "minus" 9 is 36

45 - 9 = 36.

Example 3:

‘*’ Multiplication Sign (it also referred by ‘dot’)

23 "multiplied" by 4 is 72.

23 * 4 = 72.

Example 4:

‘÷’Division Sign (it referred by Forward Slash’/’)

150 "divided" by 50 is 3.

150 ÷ 50 = 3.

Example 5:

‘>’ Greater than symbol.

45 is “greater than” 44.

45 > 44.

Example 6:

‘<’ less than symbol.

25 is “less than” 80.

25 < 80.

Example 7:

Not equal to (used for interchangeably with the ≠)

2 is not equal to 4.

2 ≠ 4.

Example 8:

‘≈’, approximate symbol.

‘2 + 9.0001’ is approximately equal to ‘11’.

2 + 9.0001 ≈ 11.

Example 9:

⊆ Set P:   P = {0, 2, 4, 6} Set Q:  Q = {4, 6} . . .

Both Set "P" and Set "Q" contains the element: 4, 6.

Therefore, Set Q is a "Subset" of Set P.

P ⊆ Q.

Example 10:

‘U’ union set.

Set X:  X= {-1, 0, 1, 6} Set Y: Y = {2, 3, 4, 5}

Both the sets have different elements.

When we perform the union operation these sets combine both the sets elements.

Therefore, X U Y = {-1,0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

Example 11:

‘∆’ triangle symbol.

By using this symbol, we can represent the triangles.

Triangle PQR is represented as ∆ PQR.
